Guyana’s U-15 team wing out for Puerto Rico today
-confident ahead of basketball tournamentBy Daniel HaynesTHE Guyana Male Under- 15 basketball team is set to depart Guyana today for the Under -15 Centro Basket Tournament in Puerto Rico. The team played its first warm-up game Thursday night at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall where they took on The Bishops’ High School Under -16 team. They made light work of the Bishops’ side with a scoreline of 52-34,winning by 18 points.According to Willon Camera, coach of the team, the team looked confident throughout the encounter.“It was a very good effort from them; being their first game together and having(just) a few days at training camp,” stated Cameron. “They were efficient on offence and communicated(well) on defence, and that’s something I’m happy to see,” he added.Willon compared the team to the U-16 silver medal winner in the Caribbean Basketball Championships, stating that mentally, this current U-15 team is tougher.“These guys don’t ever give up and they always find a way to adapt to every situation; they might be facing tall obstacles but they put their heads down and fight to overcome obstacles,” Cameron stated.He added that the CBC U-16 team relied heavily on their talent to get them through games but did not have the same level of fight.When asked about the team’s chances at the tournament and his expectations, he stated:“Well, it being our first time at Centro Basket level and U-15, it’s tough to predict what will happen, but despite that I will be proud of any outcome and with what I am seeing from this group of youngsters, basketball in Guyana has a bright future.”The championships will take place from August 24 to August 28 in Patillas, Puerto Rico.
