Defensive Player of the Week: Sophia Manibo, Lamar – Jr. – Defender/Midfielder – Beaumont, TexasAnchored by Manibo, the Cardinals’ back line held opponents to just one goal in two matches and didn’t allow SFA or SHSU many open looks as the shot accuracy in both matches came out to .286. The Ladyjacks put three of their nine shots on goal while the Bearkats’ 19 attempts produced just five on goal. Okoronkwo is the Offensive Player of the Week for the first time this fall, and teammate Sophia Manibo picks up her first Defensive Player of the Week award. Okoronkwo scored five of the Cardinals’ nine goals across two matches while Manibo led a back line that limited opponents to just one goal. Lamar (7-6, 4-1 SLC) extended its win streak to three matches with a 4-1 victory over Stephen F. Austin on Friday before blanking Sam Houston State 5-0 on Sunday. The Cardinals are back in action at 6 p.m. Friday at Southeastern Louisiana. Okoronkwo carried that momentum into Sunday’s match against the Bearkats, scoring twice and dishing out an assist to give her 11 points on the week. In just 128 minutes last week, she placed six of her seven shots on frame and scored on five of them. Hall earns her third Goalkeeper of the Week award in four weeks after recording clean sheets in a pair of 2-0 triumphs over Nicholls and Southeastern Louisiana. She has five shutouts in her last seven matches, lowering her goals-against average to a conference-best 0.88. The Islanders (6-5-1, 3-1-1 SLC) host defending conference tournament champion and first-place Abilene Christian at 7 p.m. Friday. Southland weekly award winners are nominated and voted upon by each school’s sports information director. Voting for one’s own athlete is not permitted. To earn honorable mention, a student-athlete must appear on 25 percent of ballots.
